Consolation
Robin Guthrie was born in 1902 in Harting, Sussex, the son of James Joshua Guthrie (1874-1952), also an artist and writer, and the founder of the
Pear Tree Press.

He studied at the Slade School of Art (1918-22) under Philip Wilson Steer and Henry Tonks and from 1923 exhibited with the New English Art Club; later his work was shown in the Goupil Gallery and at the Fine Art Society. He married the painter Kathleen Hilda Maltby in 1927. His droughtsmanship was admired from early in his career and in addition to painting and drawing landscapes and portraits he undetook book illustrations, inluding his father's
A Wild Garden (1924).

During a career which saw him not only painting and drawuing family friends, he attained many portrait commisions of the good and the great of thier day including Moira Shearer , Sir Frank Whittle, Claude Auchinleck, Leslie Hore-Belisha, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and David Lloyd George.

his work is in many public collections, including The National Portrait Gallery

Robin Guthrie died in 1971.
