Woodland Clearing
Michael Garton attended Exeter College of Art between 1955 and 1957 and went on to the Slade School of Art between 1957 and 1960 where he specialised in sculpture with painting as an additional subject. He commenced his teaching career in 1960 at Cardiff College of Art where he taught for three years. This was immediately followed by a lecturing post at Exeter College of Art (now Plymouth University) which he held for twenty seven years.

He has shown his work extensively in the West Country since 1962 as well as exhibiting at the Royal Academy in London and The Mall Gallery. He has participated in numerous exhibitions with the Kenn Group and won a 'Westward TV Open Prize' in 1979.

In October 2000, He said about his work:
' I work from observation and primarily in an area of woodland near my home. The
decision to do that came from needing a subject matter in which space was ever
present and somewhere where my imagination had freedom. My influences are
the British landscape tradition with John Constable being the starting point.'
Always an active member and exhibitor in RWA life for many years, Michael Garton died in April of 2004.
