Artist Susan Caines Title Fish, Garlic and Mussels Date 1990's object Painting Media oil Size 51 x 61cm Ref 883 Purchased from RWA Academicians’ exhibition in 1998 Other websites featuring this artist's work www.alpha-house.co.uk www.rwa.org.uk/memfrm.htm Fish, Garlic and Mussels It was seeing a primitive 13th century fresco of the ‘last supper’ painted by monks from Rimini in the refectory of the Abbey of Pomposa that acted as a catalyst for a series of still life paintings. The depiction of the table top executed with the precise placements of a few simple objects, minimal in concept and restrained in execution, with flattened space and spiritual intensity which attracted me. I use oil paint thinly, always aware of the surface texture with a somewhat limited palette. In this painting, ‘Fish, Garlic and Mussels’, I was interested in keeping the objects with the dark circle but suddenly with a flourish ended with a triangle of white paper pinned down by mussels. back |
