Artist Anne Hicks Title Parasols - Lerin Date 1970's object Painting Media oil Size 44.5 x 34.5 cm Ref 558 Purchased from the RWA Spring Exhibition in 1975 Other websites featuring this artist's work www.rwa.org.uk/memfrm.htm Parasols - Lerin When the Hicks’ decided to make Bristol their permanent home, they were sure that the city would provide everything they needed - not least an art academy of great distinction. The only thing lacking was the assurance of good weather for landscape painting during Jerry’s teaching holidays. They found a wonderful summer retreat on the island of St. Marguerite, a short boat trip from Cannes, on the Mediterranean. A small hut where painting materials and cooking utensils could be left from one year to the next, a wonderful Provençal climate, Mediterranean sea and light, and the company of ‘tribal’ friends who shared their taste in ‘primitive’ holidays, ensured 40 years of profound delight. Painting out of doors most days in oil and gouache gave this artist an absorbing interest in the dappled sunlight filtering through the pine trees, which illuminated family, visitors and restaurant life amongst the clothes lines and passion flowers. Many pictures were shown in the RWA Autumn Exhibitions. This painting is characteristic of the earlier oil sketches on board. Later work moved towards larger pictures in gouache on paper. Large oil paintings were derived from the sketches and painted in the studio during the winter months to keep the Mediterranean spirit alive. back |
