Lada Wan
This painting, which is oil on canvas, was made in my London studio in the 1980s. The studio was once the work place of Sir William Orpen, the leading Edwardian portrait painter who died in 1931.

Like me, he was an RA and an official war artist, he in France, me in Northern Ireland. The painting was influenced by the nudes of Richard Walter Sickert.

My main interest is light expressed through tone (light and dark) rather than colour. Thus I often painted against the light and often used transparent material (in this case a white silk shirt) to help accentuate the sensation of light.

My belief is that art is about revelation, communication and celebration and I believe this painting fulfilled those criteria.
