Sacred Cow and Calf
This painting relates to the images I was exploring when I lived and worked in India from about 1987-2002. The cow is so much part of life in India. They would wander along roads, into shops, or into our garden and always treated with the utmost courtesy. The cow is aware of its status in society and is one of the rare examples of a fine harmony between beast and man.

I painted the Indian cow for many years. They saturate the landscape with a particular mood. I venerate their unquestioning sense of confidence and clam. Juggernauts would stop as the cow slowly ambles across the road. They are loved, they are accepted, they are sacred.
