Mouthpiece.
Educated at Sidcot School in Somerset Pat Daw went on to Bristol Polytechnic in 1970. There he completed the Foundation Course and continued, graduating in 1974 with 1st Class Honours from the Sculpture School. This was immediately followed by a 3 year MA Sculpture course at The Royal College of Art. A Crafts Council bursary helped him to equip his first studio in 1981 at Thursley in Surrey, from which he produced architectural lettering commissions, and models for use in the film and advertising industries for which he won 2 awards. A notable project ‘Masterpieces’ in 1984 generated a number of group exhibitions and press articles, culminating in the Blandford Press publication of the same name which physically re-interpreted items of furniture that appeared in popular historic paintings.

In 1992 a period spent wood carving in S. Africa followed by an exhibition at Johannesburg City Art Gallery became the catalyst for expressive and technically demanding wood sculpture for the next few years. Deans Court and other galleries in the South East of England exhibited Pat’s work as well as group shows with the Surrey Sculpture Society.

After relocating to Bristol in 1995 his well established experience and interest in converting buildings provided a basis for many architecturally related projects including Sustrans HQ reception, The Southville Centre Acoustic Absorber and stairwell screens at Arboreta Papers Ltd. Since 1999 Pat has done a number of outdoor commissions including the wood carving ‘Song of The Helix’ for The Clevedon Pier Trust and ’Pelorus’ in stainless steel for the Bristol & West HQ. ‘Stronghold’ in plated mild steel commissioned by the Highways Agency was completed in 2001.

Pat Daw’s work has a thematic consistency of mechanical allegory and anatomical reference, with technical drawing as a foundation. His empirical knowledge of engineering and architectural detailing provide him with the scope to participate in commercial projects

His teaching career has spanned from 1985 to 2000 during which he has taught sculpture and 3D design at many institutions including Wimbledon School Of Art, Surrey Institute of Art and Design and The University of the West of England. He was elected a member of The Royal West of England Academy in 2003.
