These collected objects, either actual or in represented form, as in Bird Shrine, present an analogy with archaeology and buried meaning, carrying with them memories from a previous existence, even as they become part of something new. These works relate to working beaches around the coast, once busy and suffused with tradition and folklore derived from winning a living from the sea. Most have suffered a fate similar to the Scottish clearances, and are now places where objects and memory endure in a landscape of ghosts. Each work in the ‘Relics’ series is a direct response to particular locations and they exist today, but they also resonate with ethereal and evocative echoes from an ancestral world. back |
