Trying on Cardigans
In 1993 a group of members of the Royal Watercolour Society were invited to visit Malta to express their individual responses to the island’s landscape and architecture in watercolour, with subsequent exhibitions in Malta and the Bankside Gallery, London.

This watercolour is painted on Saunders Waterford 300gsm paper, covering the whole sheet, which is then floated within a window mount, retaining the deckle edges of the paper as part of the image.

The painting was made in the artist’s studio in London from notes and drawings made on the spot, and visual memories of the sparkling light diffused through semi-transparent tablecloths and curtains hanging on a quayside market stall where two lady tourists are engrossed choosing from the piles of colourful knitted cardigans
