Alastair Michie returned from Brazil in 1972, having breathed deeply of the exotic, in terms of colour, heat and richness of life, with the very extreme, in terms of this other culture which included his introduction to Makumba and Candomblé; festivals of Brazilian spiritualism.

For some years Michie produced works very much based and influenced by his Brazilian adventure, but in time, he established himself as a European painter, with occasional reference to that other life; hence ‘Tropic of Capricorn’.
