John Stuart Bond MA, Schoolmaster and contemporary.
The RWA held a memorial exhibition of Arthur Bells work between January19th and February 8th in 1997. The show contained many paintings, drawings and etchings for which the artist was well known. This portrait is one of very few commissions completed by Arthur Bell and was not available for the Exhibition of 1997. The work has however been briefly mentioned in the publication
‘Landscape Art & Architechture: Arthur Bell, RWA (1897 -1995)’ which was edited by Dr. David Boswell, who was the Artistic adviser to ABI Executors. The reference on page 28 reads:
Few portraits commissions came his way except perhaps one from J. S. Bond, a college master from 1914 -1945
and a keen collector of contemporary art
This portrait demonstrates Arthur Bell’s ability to capture the character of his sitter with subtle but charming detail and is characteristic of the fine drawing ability that underpins much of his work.
