Summer Evening, Durdham Downs
Born in Cookham, Berkshire1892, Gilbert Spencer was primarily a painter of landscapes, a noted teacher and occasional writer. Spencer studied at Camberwell School of Art, the Royal College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art in between which he served in the 1914-18 war.

Spencer's first solo exhibition was at the Goupil Gallery in early 1923, he also exhibited at the RA, the Leicester Galleries, RSA, and Redfern Gallery - at that time, the circuit for successful up and coming artists.

Gilbert Spencer's teaching career saw him working at the Royal College of Art, Glasgow School of Art and back to his old college of Camberwell. During the Second World War and by then in his early fifties, he was made an official war artist and produced some memorable work in the genre.

A major retrospective of all Spencer's works was held at Reading in 1964. His work is held in many public collections, particularly in the UK, including the Tate Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, The Ashmolean and the British Council.
