The RWA's own records relate Lewis Fry as: 'A gentleman amateur from a wealthy successful family, a strong supporter of the Royal Society of Bristol Artists and the RWA. he was made an AWRA in 1904 and elected to full RWA membership in 1907.'

Lewis Fry was born in 1832 and was the Liberal, later Liberal Unionist, MP for Bristol North from the constituency's creation in 1885 until 1886 and from 1895 until 1900, he was a Quaker and member of the Fry confectionary family.

Fry was the Chairman of the influential Parliamentary Committee on Town Holdings from 1886-1892 and was the author of two major reports on the same subject. He was later made a member of the Privy Council and was the first chairman of the Council of the University of Bristol. An annual public lecture at the University in his name continues today as his rolling memorial. He lived at Goldney Hall in Clifton, Bristol, where he passed away in 1921.
