150@150: 150th Anniversary Exhibition
10th August – 14th September 2008
As a fitting celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Royal West of England Academy’s presence at its current site, the Bristol-based gallery will be holding a very special exhibition this summer.
150 @ 150 will be an exhibition with a difference combining a historical element with a contemporary twist. To celebrate the history of this impressive establishment this exhibition will be free of charge to all visitors.

Alongside the history of this long-standing institution, will be works by RWA Academicians available at a remarkable price of £150. This will be a fantastic opportunity to fight over works by renowned artists such as
Ann Christopher RA, David Inshaw, Alfred Stockham and Robert Hurdle. As an extra bonus works will be available to take away on the day and will be replaced with others throughout the exhibition.

The RWA was established on its current site 150 years ago and was the first art gallery in Bristol and the first public fine art collection in the city. Throughout its history the Academy has shown numerous exhibitions of note, including, in 1930, a French Modern Art Exhibition that showed among others the work of Auguste Rodin, Paul Gauguin and Pierre Bonnard. In recent years the number and quality of exhibitions has increased and includes an annual open Autumn Exhibition and open exhibitions of printmaking, photography, sculpture and painting held in rotation, every four years.

150 years on, the RWA remains at the cutting edge of contemporary art. As a registered charity, it receives no government funding, relying instead upon self-generated income, investment and charitable support. So, come along and help to celebrate and support Bristol’s first ever art gallery at this special exhibition.
